CHAPTER 18

HARLOW

MISERY BUSINESS – PARAMORE

Adjusting my ponytail for the millionth time, I stare into the window in the corner of my laptop at the shiny pink scar on my forehead. It’s relatively neat now that the switches have been removed.

Who thought it was a good idea to add that distraction to online video calls? I’m freaking out with every second I have to stare at my own reflection while waiting.

This meeting has been scheduled for the last couple of weeks, and I’ve grown even more apprehensive as it has drawn closer. I wouldn’t even be here if Theo didn’t sort everything for me.

With Brooklyn on the third week of her six-week honeymoon and Sabre fighting fires on all sides, I’ve kept busy with preparing for exams this week, marking the end of my online classes.

“Just breathe,” Theo advises.

“Easy for you to say.”

“Everything’s going to be okay. I’m here with you.”

We’re hidden in the quiet sanctuary of his office in HQ. I opted to tag along with the others into London, needing moral support for this call.

“What if they don’t want to publish my book?” I bite my lip. “I know nothing about writing. It’s just a bunch of messy journals.”

Theo reaches across the desk to take my hand. “It’s far more than that, and you know it. Just hear what they have to offer.”

“What did their email say?”

“Not much,” he reveals. “We got a lot of interest in the proposal I put together for you. This publishing house was the most reputable.”

“What if they laugh at me? This could be some sick prank. The entire world hates my guts for what I did in that video.”

Theo squeezes my fingers. “Have a little faith, beautiful. There are people out there who still want the truth. They’re just being drowned out by fear and suspicion.”

Taking another measured breath, I smooth my plain white blouse and watch the clock tick down to the hour. Faith is in short supply around here, especially with the mob still protesting outside.

There’s a beep before the meeting starts, and Theo sits up a little straighter next to me. I refused to do this meeting without him.

“Hello, Harlow.”

On the screen, a brown-haired woman with friendly almond eyes and an easy smile appears in her smart business wear. I give her a little wave.

“Hi. Thank you for meeting with me.”

“Good morning,” Theo chimes in.

“My name is Abigail. I’m the executive editor here at Hawkstone Publishing. One of my agents passed your information along to me.”

“We were expecting to meet with William.” Theo stacks the sheaths of paperwork in his hands. “I’ve been communicating with him regarding Harlow’s submission to your press.”

“Of course,” Abigail begins. “But given the pseudo-celebrity status of Harlow and Sabre Security, I thought it best to handle this myself.”

Anxiety floods my system. This woman is the top dog. This could go one of two ways, and I’m terrified of the potential rejection.

“There is a lot of interest in your story, Harlow.” She smiles kindly. “I’m sure you are apprehensive about publishing your story.
